About Anilao Marine Protected Area

Located in the province of Batangas on the southwestern coast of Luzon Island, Philippines, the Anilao Marine Protected Area (AMPA) encompasses coastal waters known for their extraordinary marine biodiversity and pristine coral reefs. Established to safeguard fragile marine ecosystems and promote sustainable use of marine resources, AMPA serves as a vital sanctuary for a multitude of species, including hard and soft corals, various reef fishes, nudibranchs, sea turtles, and occasional spotting of dolphins and manta rays. The area stretches from the shoreline of Barangay Anilao in Mabini municipality, extending over several small islets, reefs, and seagrass beds, creating an ideal environment for snorkelers, freedivers, and scuba divers alike. Historically, Anilao’s protection efforts began in the 1990s following community-based initiatives driven by local stakeholders and dive resort operators who recognized the importance of conserving its marine wealth. Today, AMPA balances conservation efforts with ecotourism, providing economic opportunities for local communities via dive tourism and education programs. Visitors are drawn by the rich underwater landscapes featuring drop-offs, coral gardens, and underwater muck dives renowned for rare macro species. Beyond diving, activities such as snorkeling, boating, and underwater photography are popular. The area's accessibility from Manila, clear waters, warm tropical climate, and dedicated marine conservation programs make the Anilao Marine Protected Area a premier destination for eco-conscious travelers, marine biologists, and adventure seekers passionate about ocean life.
